Yesterday we started Brainstorming with Mrs. Timoney and Mr. Quinn. Brainstorming is coming up with lots of ideas for any topic. We started off by writing the name of the theme in the middle of the page. Then you write things that remind you of the topic or how you feel about the topic. The most important thing is the ideas – spelling and writing doesn’t matter. We brainstormed the themes of “Holidays” and “Hobbies” and for homework we brainstormed “School”. We are doing this in preparation for Creative Writing.

We made a podcast of the play “Witch Griselda Rides Again”. We started off by reading the play a few times. Then the parts were given out to everybody. We recorded the play on the class computer using Audacity. We then had to make it into an MP3 file and put it on our blog. We had lots of fun making it. We hope we can do it again sometime.

Library Trip 01

Today we went to Sligo County Library to listen to an author named Malachy part of Children’s Book Festival 2010. We listened to him read some stories that he had written. There was one story called “Football Ghosts”. He read half of it and he asked us some questions. He also asked us what we thought would come next.

Library Visit 02

There was another story called “The Lambton Curse”. It was about a young rude boy called Young Lambton. While his family was at mass on Sunday he went out fishing. He caught a worm that looked like an eel. When his family returned from mass he threw the worm down the well. An old man told him not to do it because whoever caught the worm had to keep it. Because he caught the worm, Young Lambton’s family would be cursed forever.

Library Visit 03

Another book was called The Dancing Tiger”. It was about a little girl and a tiger who danced in the forest at night. Two girls from the class danced with a teddy tiger that Malachy had brought with him.

We really enjoyed our library trip. We thought the stories were really good and interesting. We thought that Malachy Doyle was a good storyteller and author. The whole trip was outstanding.

In January we started reading Hans Christian Andersen stories like “The Ugly Duckling”, “The Emeror’s New Clothes”, “The Little Match Girl”, “The Princess and the Pea” and “The Little Nightingale”. We really enjoyed them and we would like to read some more. We would like to tell you about “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.

The Emperor’s New Clothes is about an Emperor who loves new clothes. Two men came to make him a new suit but they were not going to make him a suit at all. They just wanted money and gold string. So they just pretended that they were making a suit. Everybody heard about the new suit so they came to see it. But nobody could see it, but they didn’t want to say it. Then a little boy said “He has no clothes on”. By the time the Emperor found out the men had already gone.

In January we made “My Favourite Things” books. We wrote about our favourite things. We wrote about our favourite food, our favourite holiday, our favourite sport, our favourite dinner, a pet we would like to have and what job we would like to have when we grow up. We drew pictures and coloured them in. We designed the front cover and wrote the title of the book and the authors name.We only had three days to finish the book. We displayed our books on our classroom wall. We had lots of fun making the books.
