The next morning we did kayaking. We did kayaking for two and a half hours. We played fun kayaking games. We played cops ‘n’ robbers game like ‘Sharks and Minnows’. We did pier jumping and played on our kayaks.
Afterwards we did team building. Some games were confusing! The first one was called ‘Spiders Web’. It was ropes all tied together which we had to crawl through without touching the rope. If one of the team-members touched the web we would have to start over.
Another game was when an instructor made a noise and we had to be blind-folded and try to find where the noise was coming from.
The next game was we had three planks of wood. We would have to find a way to get across the wood with-out touching the ground.
Another game was called ‘Towers of Hanoi’. We had three poles and five tyres. The first pole had all tyres. Each tyre had a number on them. The second pole had to have one of these tyres on it at all times. The third pole was the pole which we had to move all the tyres to, in their proper order. It was a very confusing game!
Near night-time we had to do a bog-walk (nightline.) It’s basically where we had to wear blindfolds and walk in mud. It was very muddy and fun! We walked into puddles of muck and one of the puddles was up to our necks! The person in front of you had to direct you where to walk! Overall we really enjoyed it!!! J J

Delphi Day 3
The Great Adventure
We woke up and took everything out of the room and put them in the sports hall. Next we had breakfast we had cereal, tea and toast. Soon we headed for the zip wire .We climbed up a ladder joining to a pole. On top of the pole there was a wobbly platform and a very nice man who helped us with our harness .We jumped off the platform it was fun but scary. As we were sliding down the zip wire we had too drop our rope so the instructor could catch it. The black leaver was attached to the rope which we had to pull down with two hands to lower our self to the ground. We took off our harness and the next person brought it up to the platform. It was great fun!!
Next we walked to the archery range. It was very close. There the instructor taught us about archery. Everyone had a few practice shots. It was quite hard! We played a game where we had to think of famous people and places to aim for there five colours: yellow, blue, red black and white. The two teams got a person to date and a place to go to. It was really fun! After we headed back to lunch in the adventure centre
We first got into our pjs and went down for lunch we got chips, fish fingers and soup. After we went up to the conservatory and talked to our friends for a while. We were sad to be leaving already. Our journey home was about 3 hours long we watched a movie on the way home called Shrek. We arrived home at half 4. We were all really tired.
On Thursday everyone was too tired to come into school. On Friday only about 7 people came in. It was the best school tour ever we hope to go back. Everyone had the best time!!

6th Class have been involved in planning and designing a mural for our school bike shed.
Karen Webster:
On the 5th of May 2011 an artist called Karen Webster came into our classroom and talked to us about the sea. She then told us about a mural we were planning to do and that we would be having different sessions with her. She said we would be painting the mural on the bike shed, around the back of the school within a few weeks. We were all very excited! After she talked to us about it, she got us to draw and paint some ideas that she would scan onto the mural!
Why?
We chose to do the mural on the sea because Karen thought that the sea is very important in our eco-system. The sea is also very close to us (Strandhill beach). We love the sea and find it a very interesting place. Karen told us some facts about the sea, for eg:
- 70% of the world is made up of ocean/sea.
- There is over 500 types of seaweed.
Karen encouraged us a lot and she got us very interested in the ocean!!
What we did?
We drew our creations on water paper and then painted them. We used special pens so that the ink would run so it made the outsides darker. Then the paint ran over them and so the creations would come alive! Karen then gave us fact sheets so we would know a bit about what we were painting.
How we designed it?
We designed it by using the paintings we painted in previous sessions to use in the mural. The next week she told us how she was planning to put it up onto the wall of the bike shed. She also gave us the plan that we had decided on, and told us to colour it in so we would have the colours already organized for when we were painting the mural!
Painting:
This week we are painting the Mural. We have already drawn the grid and animals. Tomorrow we are going to start painting it with colour and detail. Karen will come in and help us to not make mistakes like running paint or painting over something! We are painting from Monday to Thursday and there are 4 groups and we each get a half an hour working on it.

We are learning about World War II. Life during WW2 was very tough because food was very scarce. Food was scarce because supplies usually came to Ireland and Great Britain by ship and many supply ships were sunk by German U-boats, which were submarines. Because food was scarce it was rationed. This meant that you could only buy a certain amount of rationed food per week. Everyone had a ration book with coupons. You gave the ration book to the shopkeeper and then you got your food for the week. Foods that were rationed were eggs, bacon, lard, butter, tea, sugar, and coffee.
In Ireland during WW2 it was called “The Emergency”. Éamon de Valera, was the Taoiseach at the time and he made Ireland stay neutral during the war. That meant that Ireland was not on any side during the war. Two places in Dublin were bombed by German planes during the war. They were the Phoenix Park and the North Strand. The president’s house, Áras an Uachtaráin, was damaged in the bombing. 38 people were killed and 70 homes were destroyed. Germany apologised after the war and paid for the damages. Belfast was also bombed twice during the war.
Some children had to be evacuated from cities to the countryside because bombs were being dropped constantly in cities to destroy supply factories that made weapons for the war. Children were only allowed to bring whatever they could carry and their favourite toy. They also had to bring their gas mask. Sometimes children’s gas masks were called “Mickey Mouse Gas Masks” to encourage them to wear it. Mrs Breen brought in a gas mask from WW2 and we tried it on. It smelled very strongly of rubber. You put it on like a swimming hat. It was meant to be tight so that gas would not get in. You couldn’t take it off to get a drink.

To end the war the USA dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanesen cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the first and last time such a bomb had been used. The first bomb was called “Little Boy” and when it blew up it gave out a mushroom cloud. It killed 138,661 people in the first five days.

Last Thursday we went on a bus to visit Breeogue
Pottery. It is very close to our school.
Grainne showed us around her studio. We saw the two kilns that Grainne used for our sculptures and pots.
Grainne made a bowl and a vase while we were there. It was fascinating to watch Grainne make these items from clay!
Grainne then showed us how to glaze our sculptures. We were pleased to see our sculptures, they are now a white colour!
Then we went to visit the shop and we saw fantastic pieces of pottery that both Grainne and Tom made! We can see how much time and effort it takes to make an item out of clay!

Check out our coil pots!
Grainne put our pots into the kiln after we glazed them. We think they are lovely! Grainne said that they were so good that she could sell them in her shop!
