Spring Lunes 01

On Tuesday a few weeks ago we made Flickr Lunes on our iPods. There were seven Spring animals that we had to choose from. Mr. Quinn numvered them and gave each of us a number. The animals were piglets, chicks, goslings, lambs, calves, cygnets and foals. A Flickr Lune is a three line poem. The firts line has three words, the sencond line has five words and the third line has three words. We really enjoyed doing this.

Trans-Atlantic Sweet Postage

We are sending a box of sweets over to Indiana USA. We are sending them to @superkiddos who are a school we know on Twitter. We decided to swap sweets with them. We are sending them some of the sweets that they don’t have and we do have. They are sending us sweets that we can’t get in Ireland. Before we sent the sweets over, we discussed with Ms. Rolf what to send over and what not to send over. We asked Ms. Rolf for help because she was born in Texas USA. We used Twitter to ask @superkiddos to ask them what we have and what they don’t.

In the box that we are sending we put in some Cadbury sweets because they don’t have them, Taytos, Chickatees, Chipsticks, Hoola Hoops, Onion Rings, Snakes and Shamrocks, Emerald sweets and lots of others. We are looking forward to seeing what sweets they send us over and we are looking forward to tasting them.

Mr. Quinn’s class regularly use Twitter in the classroom to let people know what we are doing in class and to find out information. Up to this we have been using the standard Twitter profile picture which is a purple egg! So we decided to make our own Twitter profile picture. We had a competition in the class to design a new profile picture for our Twitter page ( @mrquinnsclass) We spent a long time trying to make a short list of best designs. After a lot of discussion and choosing, we have selected what we agreed were the best six pictures.

The class have voted for their favourite picture. They did this without knowing who designed each of the pictures. These votes are now sealed in an envelope. These are the six final pictures chosen.

Bia

A couple of weeks ago we went on our iPods and did some mins maps on Simple Mind Xpress. We did it on food. It was hard because sometimes it would change the Irish word into an English word. Our heading was “Bia”. We typed in the food that we liked and that we didn’t like. Some of the phrases we used were “Is fuath liom”, “Ní maith liom”, “Is breá liom”, “Is maith liom” and “Is aoibheann liom”. We used our Irish book for the spellings. We saved the mind maps and used the Bump app to get the pictures onto our teachers iPod and he printed them out. We had fun making them.

Children at Play

Yesterday we looked at a website about games people played in Roman times. We tried to play one of the games called knucklebones using cubes. Originally the games was played with ankle bones of a sheep or goat. Today on Twitter we looked at our mentions and @fboss told us that he had seen a picture of children playing knucklebones. We found the picture, called “Children at Play” by Peter Brueghel, on Google Images. There are 200 children in the picture, playing over 80 games. The picture was painted in 1560. Some of the games in the picture are still played today.

Fairy Tale Books

We made Fairy Tale books. We designed the cover of the book. We had to finish off the stories. We did decorative borders on the pages. There was a story about an elephant that lost a piece of his trunk and he was very fat. There was a story about a boy who drank his orange juice and then he turned invisible. There was another story about a boy who woke up one morning and found twelve elves around his bed. At the end you could add in your own story and draw your own picture. We put all the books on display in the corridor. Everyone thought they were brilliant.

Two weeks ago, we started doing work on feelings. We decided on a feeling like sad, happy, lucky, useless, stupid, peaceful, lost, sore and bitter. We took pictures of ourselves doing facial expressions and gestures to match the feeling. We printed out the photographs and put them up on the wall beside the feelings words. Here is what is looks like:
