The Titanic sunk 100 years ago when it hit an iceberg. It was built in Belfast and took three years to build. Everyone said that the Titanic was unsinkable. It had enormous propellars. The top speed of the Titanic was 25 knots. The crew didn’t believe that there was a hole in the ship. 710 people survived and 1500 people died. The richest man at the time was on the Titanic and he didn’t survive. One person died launching the Titanic and nine people died building it. The Captain’s name was Edward John Smith and he died on the Titanic.

Seven people from Sligo were on the Titanic and only one survived. She was from the area near our school called Coolera. She had a penknife her friend had given her from Barton Smith’s shop (which is still open) and she used the penknife to cut the ropes when the lifeboats got stuck.

1st Prize

I came first in the INTO handwriting competition!  My name was called out and I had my photograph taken.  Then my school was entered into a competition and I won a €100 euro book token for our school!  We got a bag of sweets at the end, it was so much fun!

We were learning about the middle ages in history. We looked at medieval castles and

we made our own castles. We were in four groups. Each group made their own castle on

a motte. We made a bailey and moat around the castle. Here are some of the pictures

of our castles.

We talked about the season of winter.  We learned about the different types of
weather we have in Ireland during winter.

We looked at some real winter scenes and some winter paintings
on the whiteboard.  They were beautiful.

Then we created our own winter scene and we painted it!  We took some photos of them.

2nd & 3rd Class

We studied the life of Vincent Van Gogh. we looked at his paintings from his yellow and blue period. We chose our favourite paintings and painted some of them. here are some of our paintings.

We have a new artist working with us on our Crafted Project, her name is Grainne Callery. Grainne and her husband Tom have their own pottery studio called Breeogue Pottery Callery Ceramics, see their website:http://www.calleryceramics.com.

Grainne showed us how to glaze our coil pots and we used different coloured glazes to decorate our pot! We really enjoyed our workshop. Grainne is going to put our pots into a kiln, we can’t wait to see how they turn out! We will keep you posted ;)

Mary Cullen

It is with great sadness that we wish to inform you of the death of our dear colleague Mary Cullen. School will be closed on Tuesday 17th for the funeral. The 1st Communion Choir will sing at the funeral mass. Other children are being asked to form a guard of honour outside the church with their parents. A note to explain the arrangements will follow tomorrow. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilís.

Miss Hynes asked the class to bring in things like toilet rolls, plastic bottles and straws to construct a model of a wave energy generator. The choices were a Pelamis or an Oyster. Most people made a Pelamis.

When everyone had finished making their Oyster or Pelamis, they left them to dry at the back of the room.

The next day we had fun painting them.

We are enjoying our project so far!

We read the story of the lion and the mouse.  It is one of Aesop’s Fables.

We looked at a clip on YouTube and we looked at lots of photographs of lions.

We drew a picture of a lion using charcoal.

We took a photograph of our lions.

It was fun.

What is the moral of this story?

Little friends may prove to be great friends.
Good things come in small packages.
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Be nice to other people and they will be nice to you.
